A Budapesti Fesztiválzenekar művészeinek előadásaival kísért ünnepélyes eseményen beszédet mondott a főpolgármester, kiemelve, hogy:
“Budapest ma az egyik olyan európai város, amely ismeri a szabadság értékét és amely miután a diktatúrákért magas árat fizetett, küldetésként magában hordozza a demokrácia kincsének és a béke álmának őrzését.
Az apostoli nuncius arról beszélt, hogy a világunkban, amelyet megosztanak a határok, nyelvek és ideológiák, a természet micsoda kiemelkedő példája az egységnek. A békéről szólva elmondta, hogy a béke nem adottság, azért meg kell dolgoznunk, el kell ültetnünk és ápolnunk kell. A béke nem a gyáváknak, hanem a bátraknak való, a béke adja a világ erejét.
A Margitszigeten a Rózsa-kert mellett elültetetett fácska nem csak a békét, és Budapest és a katolikus egyház a béke melletti elkötelezettségét, de a béke iránti szüntelen vágyunkat is jelképezi.
The Ambassador of the Vatican to Hungary and the Mayor of Budapest planted a symbolic peace tree on Margaret Island
The Apostolic Nuncio to Hungary, Michael Wallace Banach, and the Mayor of Budapest, Gergely Karácsony, jointly planted a tree sapling on 17 October on Margaret Island, symbolising peace, our commitment to peace, and our deep desire for peace.
At the ceremony, which was accompanied by performances of the Budapest Festival Orchestra, the Mayor of Budapest delivered a speech, underlining that
„Budapest today is one of the European cities that knows the value of freedom and that, after paying a high price for dictatorships, has a mission to guard the treasure of democracy and the dream of peace.”
The Apostolic Nuncio pointed out that in a world divided by borders, languages and ideologies, nature is an outstanding example of unity. Speaking of peace, he said that it is not given, it is something we must work for, it must be planted in the world and nurtured. Peace is not for cowards, but for the brave, peace is the strength of the world.
The tree planted near the Rose Garden on Margaret Island is a symbol not only of peace, and of the commitment of Budapest and the Catholic Church to peace, but also of our unceasing desire for peace.
